Basic Protective Measures against the New Coronavirus

新型冠状病毒的基本防护措施

Since the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) broke out in Wuhan in late December 2019, the Chinese government has taken many measures to prevent it from spreading wide. For common people, what are the basic protective measures against the new coronavirus?

First, wash your hands frequently with soap and water as it kills the virus on your hands.

Second, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with your hands. Why? Because your hands may have touched many surfaces which are contaminated (污染) with the virus. If you touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your contaminated hands, you can transfer the virus from the surface to yourself.

Third, keep social distancing — keep at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and other people, particularly those who are coughing, sneezing and having a fever. When someone who is infected with a respiratory (呼吸的) disease, like 2019-nCoV, coughs or sneezes, they project small droplets containing the virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the virus.

What's more, avoid going to closed, airtight (密封的) public places and places where people are concentrated. Wear masks if necessary.

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early. If you have been in close contact with someone who has travelled from Hubei province, it's important to seek medical attention and isolate (隔离) yourself. If you have mild respiratory symptoms (症状) and no travel history to or within Hubei, stay home until you are recovered, if possible.
